Ángel Hernández Lovera is a Venezuelan composer based in Vienna whose artistic practice moves between opera, music theatre, instrumental composition, performance, and electronic music.

At the core of his work lies an ongoing search for identity, memory, and belonging. His music emerges from a continuous exploration of his cultural roots and the challenge of reimagining them through his own artistic voice. Rather than treating tradition as a fixed heritage, Hernández Lovera approaches it as a living and evolving force, seeking ways to connect the experiences of his past with the questions of his present and the possibilities of the future.

Deeply committed to experimentation, he views each composition as a space for discovery. Yet innovation is never pursued as an end in itself. Equally important to him are the experiences of performers and audiences, creating works that invite participation, imagination, and emotional engagement. His music often combines theatricality, rhythmic vitality, timbral exploration, and a strong sense of narrative, building immersive worlds where sound becomes a vehicle for transformation.

Recent distinctions include the Second Prize at the Gustav Mahler Composition Award (2026) for Mawari and a Special Mention for his string quartet Duktus at the International Composition Competition for String Quartet organized by the Georg and Alice Eisler Fund. In 2017, he received the Joseph Haydn International Composition Prize, and in 2021 he was a finalist of the Basel Composition Competition.

A significant milestone in his artistic career was the premiere of his chamber opera Alice at the Teresa Carreño Theatre in Caracas in 2024. His music has been performed throughout Europe and Latin America by renowned artists, ensembles, and orchestras and is published by Universal Edition.
